Some are predicting that drones will be “the next major disruption to impact the oil and gas industry,” with Texas as its potential epicenter.
There are reports of innovative uses for commercial drones daily. Just last week, the Houston-based company Sky Futures completed its first ever drone inspection in the Gulf of Mexico for the oil & gas industry. Sky Futures just received its authorization for commercial operations 10 months ago. Vice President of Operations, Jay Forte, of Sky Futures recently remarked that “Since receiving our FAA Exemption 10 months ago we have made considerable progress; opening our office in Houston, growing our team by hiring and training Remote Pilots and Engineers, and completing our first onshore contract in September 2015. We have now established ourselves as the leading drone inspection service provider in the Gulf of Mexico. We have proven that drones can be successfully used for more efficient and safe inspections in the gulf, just as we have already done across the world.’’
Besides gulf inspections, what are some of the leading uses of drones for the Oil & Gas industry in Texas? The folks at Doheny Drones have compiled a list of six:
1. Flare Stack Inspections
- Oil pipeline Inspections
- Offshore oil platform inspections
- Tailings pond inspections
- Oil spill and damage detection
- Gas emissions monitoring
